Fighter jets scrambled again because of unruly airline passenger January 8, 2010 9:15 p.m. EST (CNN) -- In the second such incident in three days, fighter jets escorted a diverted commercial flight on Friday after an unruly passenger caused alarm onboard. The military sent up two F-16s in response to reports of an unruly passenger aboard AirTran Flight 39, the North American Aerospace Defense Command said in a statement. The passenger had become belligerent and refused to leave the restroom, airline spokesman Tad Hutcheson told CNN on Friday. The passenger appeared to be intoxicated, he said. The flight, bound for San Francisco, California, left Atlanta, Georgia, at 9:48 a.m. ET, according to AirTran's Web site. NORAD dispatched the fighters at 1:44 p.m. ET, escorting the aircraft to a safe emergency landing in Colorado Springs, Colorado, officials said. The passenger was detained there and FBI agents from Denver, Colorado, were called to question passengers, Hutcheson said. The other passengers were scheduled to continue their trip at 4:30 p.m. ET, he said. On Wednesday, NORAD escorted a Hawaii-bound plane back to its origination city of Portland, Oregon, after a passenger gave a flight attendant a note that was interpreted as being threatening, the federal complaint and supporting affidavit said Friday. The passenger, Joseph Hedlund Johnson, 56, told the FBI he hadn't intended to scare anyone with the note, which began, "I thought I was going to die," and referenced the television show "Gilligan's Island."

A guy screwing around in the bathroom doesn't sound very reassuring for the other passengers. He could be planting a bomb in there (the explosive kind or maybe the smelly kind haha). Regardless of anything else, you just don't challenge authority, laws and / or regulations while on an airplane. If someone tells you that you've been in the bathroom for too long and need to remove yourself from the lavatory then YOU DO IT! They take that stuff very seriously, and of course the other passengers aren't going to be happy with you if their flight gets turned around to land where it took off from so they can book the belligerent. I'm supportive of someone's right to protest something stupid but do that crap somewhere else and NOT on an airplane. Oh and what are the fighter jet escorts there for? Rofl, yea like they would actually shoot the plane down. I'm sure those pilots would get so much crap if they shot down a plane, regardless of its intended destination (terrorist attack, etc). What a complete waste of taxpayer dollars (the fuel costs for those jets). As to the passenger passing a note to a flight attendant... All I can say is to ask "Why?". I don't think you start a flirting letter with "I thought I was going to die" unless it was like "I thought I was going to die when I saw you because you are so beautiful". So if it wasn't a letter to flirt with the attendant then why the heck would he have written it and passed it to the attendant? You don't screw around on airplanes these days. I do not see how "I thought I was going to die" is threatening. Its almost the same thing as someone remarking to a friend while on an airplane that "Obama sounds like Oh-Bomb-a. You know like that thing that blows up? Ain't that weird?". Nothing threatening was said but its a super poor choice of words considering where the two friends are located when one of them said the word 'bomb". I just want to say again that you just don't screw around on airplanes, no matter what it is. Do it somewhere else where 50+ other people with bad memories aren't going to freak out when you do it.
